  1. Promotional activity 1 – Adapted Sports Open Day

Description of an example of activities aimed at stimulating participation in sports/physical activity for people with disabilities.

General description of the activitiesOrganising an open day, by asking sports and physical activity providers from the region/municipality to showcase their sport on the open day and invite participants to join and try out. If the participants like the sport, they can make arrangements directly with the relevant sports provider to go and play sports there.

Municipality or sports service organisation hosts the open day in collaboration with sports providers/sports clubs from the area/region.
Required facilities, locationSports club where several sports can be practiced or a sports hall – make sure it’s fully accessible!
Required materialsSports providers bring their own materials to demonstrate and to allow people to try the sport; for example, they may provide enough sports wheelchairs for people to try out various sports.
Supervisor competenciesPeople with an understanding of the specific sports offered and with knowledge of the possibilities to regularly play this sport. Ability to manage and coordinate an event.
Specific focus point

Also involve sports organisations that do not (yet) have an adapted sports offer, to show them the opportunities.

Invite sponsors/local companies to contribute to the event.

Make sure the accommodation is fully accessible.

2. Promotional activity 2 – Creating local/regional overview of all (adapted) sports activities offered

Description of an example of activities aimed at stimulating participation in sports/physical activity for people with disabilities.

Type of activityCreating and maintaining a central overview (possibly digital) of all the sports and physical activities for people with disabilities.

The goal of the activity:Increase the ability to find adapted sports and physical activities.
Target groupPeople with disabilities who are looking for a sport or physical activity in their city or region and professionals who are looking for a suitable physical or sports activity for their clients to refer them to.
Duration, scope of the activityThe time that is needed to build a platform and collect all the data from sports and physical activity providers and enter it into the system.
General description of the activities

1. Developing a digital platform that people can use to search for suitable activities, based on criteria such as type of disability and distance to residential location.

2. Collecting the data of all sports and physical activity providers with activities for the target group, people with disabilities, and classifying them by target group and location.

3. Promotional activity 3 – Theme week of adaptive sports

Organising extra (media) attention for adapted sports in the relevant week/month by scheduling appointments with local/regional media.

Organising “open training programmes” and/or events so that people with disabilities can try out various sports for free.

Type of partnersSports and physical activity providers that offer training for people with disabilities (offer open training programmes at their own location), media partners, the municipality (to promote or subsidise extra events in that week/month).
Required facilities, locationFacilities of the sports and physical activity providers; if needed, additional events such as a joint open day at a (large) sports centre.

Supervisor competenciesKnowledge of dealing with specific target groups of people with disabilities. Ability to manage and coordinate the event.

4. Promotional activity 4 – Sport Heroes

Description of an example of activities aimed at stimulating participation in sports/physical activity for people with disabilities.

Type of activityIntroduction lessons for sports and physical activities that last 5-6 weeks.
Target areaNational/regional
The goal of the activity:Children and young people with a disability get acquainted with various types of sports and physical activities, through lessons provided at their schools. After those lessons they go on to play those sports at the sports clubs and when can join that sports club and become physically active on a structural basis. Through the lessons at school, also their physical fitness is improved, but also self-confidence, independence, and social interaction.
Target groupChildren and young people (6-19 years) with a disability who are in primary and secondary special education.
Duration, scope of the activityThree to five weeks, one hour per week, introductory lessons at school, followed by an introduction to sports and physical activity at the accommodation of the sports providers. This cycle can be organised once per school year or more often.
General description of the activitiesStudents become familiar with one or more branches of sport or forms of physical activity during school hours. This under the supervision of a trainer from a sports or physical activity provider. After a few lessons, students who wish to do so can get to know more about sports or exercising at the location of the sports or physical activity provider. After that they can become a member and play sports or engage in physical activity regularly.
Type of partnersSports and physical activity providers such as sports clubs, dance schools, fitness, martial arts organisations, yoga schools, etc.
Required facilities, locationSchool gymnasium and the facilities of the sports or physical activity provider.

5. Promotional activity 5 – Bring a Friend

Description of an example of activities aimed at stimulating participation in sports/physical activity for people with disabilities.

Type of activityDiscover sports and physical activities with someone you know.
Target areaRegional/local
The goal of the activity:Allowing people who do not play sports or are hardly ever physically active (and their parents, carers, etc.) to discover sports or physical activities in an easily accessible way.
Target groupPeople with a disability or chronic condition who do not (yet) play sports or are hardly physically active at all.
Duration, scope of the activityOne-time introduction of approximately 2-3 hours with an option for a follow-up.
General description of the activities

Someone who actively participates in sports or physical activities asks someone else (a friend, relative, etc.) to join them for an activity or training.

Several people do this at the same time at the same sports or physical activities provider. The guests are welcomed at a joint reception, receive a trial lesson or training, and get to know the organisation/sports club.

6. Promotional activity 6 – Trial lessons at sports club

Description of an example of activities aimed at stimulating participation in sports/physical activity for people with disabilities.

Type of activityPeople with disabilities can participate free of charge in a new or existing training programme at the club: participation in existing (adapted) activities.
Target areaLocal/regional
The goal of the activity:Introducing people with disabilities to a specific sport
Target groupPeople with disabilities in the area of the club (local/regional), for whom this specific adapted sport is suitable.
Duration, scope of the activityOffer one or two training sessions, preferably with regular trainers of the club.
General description of the activitiesOffer adapted sports training at the sports club, where the target group is invited and can participate free of charge.

Description of an example of activities aimed at stimulating participation in sports/physical activity for people with disabilities.

Carrying out an activity open to everyone’s participation, using sports practiced specifically by people with disabilities (e.g. Boccia, Goalball, etc.) – in one action, only one modality or several can be practiced.
